What's your budget?
Boss makes a number of great distortions. The MT-2 can get pretty nasty, though it can be a little bit harsh in its clipping at times. I can get just about any kind of metal I want out of mine. The DS-1 is a fairly famous Boss distortion pedal as well.
Behringer makes a very affordable tube-based distortion, the model number of which I don't recall. Very nice, this one.
The EHX "Metal Muff" usually gets good reviews, as well.

You should probably check out a Metal Muff. There are at least three different versions (Metal Muff with Top Boost and two smaller versions). Any of the models is within your budget and they do heavy distortion very well.

I've only played one once. It was more versatile than I expected, and could do some rock sounds too. You won't be happy with it if you want to sound like Stevie Ray Vaughan or anything. It obviously excels at rocking out. But it's not all completely saturated death metal tones either.
Honestly, no ONE distortion pedal is going to give you bluesy break up and crushing heavy metal all in one pedal, in a way that will really satisfy you. It's always good to have an overdrive that does the lower gain stuff well and then a full on distortion that kicks you into high gain territory.

moe and i need to start a Metal Muff alliance. the metal muff is a killer distortion get it and screw the boss junk when Andrew said they can be harsh, they are harsh, and trust me, it isnt a good harsh.

Yeah, that MT-2 is nice an organic as long as I keep the gain below about 10 o'clock, but after that, it starts to get shrill and harsh, quickly.

Did seach outta curiosity, and found this:http://cgi.ebay.com/Damage-Control-Liquid-Blues-tube-overdrive-preamp-/180512526886?cmd=ViewItem&pt=Guitar_Accessories&hash=item2a07629226
If I had the money I'd do it and risk feeling bad about it later. I think it would suffice for me.

Yeah, ok. Sorry about that. Late night brain fart. Tube+digital still equals digital.

Well actually it's not a bad idea. A tube overdrive pedal can go in front of a solid state amp as long as the amp is clean and has lots of headroom for the tube distortion to grow into; what you don't want is the tube pedal distorting, and then getting clipped again in the solid state circuit. But if the amp has the headroom for it, a tube overdrive/distortion into a solid state poweramp can be sweet.

True, I've played a Presonus tube preamp into a solid state PA. It sounded really good. Of course it's not footswitchable or anything, but It had some really smooth fuzz too it. Hardly any mud. I should try running through the Crate I got a couple months ago, although I really like the distortion on that. I actually prefer to overdrive the clean channel, it gets a nice fuzzface sort of tone to it, versus the crunchy muddiness of the dirt channel that dosen't give me any EQ.
