Boss is pretty versitile. I use the DS1 for some Metallica and it works out nicely.

I never liked the boss distortion pedals too much, but hey, you might. So definatly try them out.

My vote also goes to the  EHX Metal muff. Great pedal, does anything between Rolling Stones and Dimmu Borgir.

Yeah the Metal Muff is good, by all accounts.

Playing the metal muffled in stores and watching some online videos has definately pushed the metal muff far above the competition in my eyes. It is extremely versitile and it scoops pretty nicely.

That's a more difficult question for us to answer, as the tube amp that we tried one particular pedal through might sound different than the same pedal through a diff tube amp.

That being said, from what I understand, the blackstar HT-X tends to not be as tight as the metal muff; so if you wanted to, say, get a Mesa kinda tone out of it, you might need to put a driver before the pedal to tighten it up.

That's completely speculation on my part though. I'd say either one are good pedals.

There's no difinitive answer to that. The both will sound great on a tube amp, what you have to do I listen to some play, and play some yourself. A drive will greatly help clen it up on both pedals.
