ok, so is there something wrong with playing by ear? Im curious. Im learning theory to, but I am gifted with a good ear as well. thoughts?

Theory is incredibly valuable, but you don't need it to play guitar. I've studied theory since kindergarten and the second I start playing, I forget all of it. Some people like to calculate their playing, while others just "feel" it and let it happen (ie Hendrix). Remember, theory makes you a better musician, but playing makes you a better guitarist.
