I've always said to start looking for better tone by getting a better guitar first. Or at least I've put it very high on the list, possibly more important than getting a better amp.

I'm going back on that now. Get a better amp first. Why the sudden change?

... Anybody remember that crappy Epiphone Les Paul Special II I had that I was fond of cutting on? Well I haven't gotten around to chopping it up into a flying V yet, so I plugged it into the B-52 to see how it sounded. The new amp even makes THIS PIECE OF CRAP sound good. I was astonished.

So yes - now I'm going on record as saying I was wrong. Crappy guitar is fine - get a better amp!

(edit: this also means I'm totally happy w/ keeping the electronics in this gutiar for the V build. All I need to do now is go to megalodepot and buy the body wood.  Rawk1 )

i have always maintained that amp equates to much more of your tone.

cheap guitar + good amp = good tone
good guitat + cheap amp = bad tone.

One problem with that equation.

Cheap Amp =/= Bad Amp.

cheap guitar + good amp = good tone

One problem with that equation.

Cheap Amp =/= Bad Amp.

well, in dealing with equivalents

squier strat/other cheap beginner gutiar + good amp = good tone
good guitar + cheap practice amp/nasty SS modelling digital wank crap thing = bad tone

and what kind of amps do beginners normally end up with?

then what is the first thing they upgrade normally?

then they throw money on things like pedals and expensive pickups and hardware (seen this SO many times) and are still running that crappy SS modelling digital wank crap thing. then wonder why their tone is bad?

im just getting at on a super concise tiny little easy to remember soundbite, and a rule of thumb for tone in general.

A good guitar is about look, feel , playability , but into a bad amp, sounds just as (your word here) as the rest... However , even a cheap guitar (properly set up)  will sound OK into a Good amp/speakers ... The guitar is the signal , the amp is the TONE !!!! Rawk1
Being "thrifty"  , I started making my own simple tube amps a couple years ago to gig with ...They make my homemade guitars sound Super !!!     Grin   The same guitars played for years on SS amps and sounded ... rather BLAH!!!  Facepalm
