These are well made.
http://guitars.musiciansfriend.com/product/Ibanez-GRX20-Electric-Guitar?sku=519417
A rather generic tone, but still good.

i have a bullet and i have had it for 3 years and its realy nice!! i play punk rock and prog metal i have it with a line 6 spider III amp. i think you can get both for around what you saying. BUT i was 11 when i got my bullet cuz they are a bit smaller than standered guitars but not by much but go with squior cuz they are pretty much a brand deticated to beginners. ALSO i would suggest not getting the squior and amp package deal becuse one the little fender amp sucks and for some reson when you buy the guitar in the package deal it is made cheaper than if you were to buy the guitar and the amp seprate. my friend got the package and boy does it sound like crap. hope i help!

Get an Ibanez SA not the real one cost's about 1,500 euro's i think but the other one that doesnt say Satriani at the end of the neck
cost's just about 250/300 and it plays really realy good for such a low price

my first guitar ( like most people ) was a squier strat and even though i now have a way more expensive guitar every now and then i find my self playing on the strat because its so much easier. I live in england and they are easily in your price range with an amp and lead so if your just starting out i recommend that. ANother suggestion is find a local guitar store and go in and spend a day trying out different guitars. Even if you dont know how to play you will find one which you like. Eg neck size, weight and looks. Im sure youll find one in your price range. Might even get a slightly old worn one which could look coll ( if thats what your after )

I agree with goofy. I've been playing for a while, and I have a Squier Stratocaster, and, even though it's built like a total piece of crap, I love to play it over this other guitar I bought that was nearly a grand. I feel like with cheaper guitars, there more fun to play because you can like squeeze alot of stuff out of them. Well I'm just gonna shut up now because I'm confusing myself, but anyway, my friend has an Affinity, and it sound like a cat with it's testicles in a vice. I'd go with an Ibanez or a Squier Strat.

I'm going to assume that by 'Squier Strat' y'all mean 'Squier Standard Strat' (ocaster). 'Squier Strat' could refer to the Standard, the Bullet, or the Affinity. If not, this is confusing. Apparently there are some very good Bullets and Affinitys out there, but there are a lot of lemons, too. I haven't seen many credible bad reviews of Standards, though.
And I really like mine.
$229 USD, new.

I've played several Squier Bullet Strats and have never found one that i'd even consider buying. Standards seem to be the same way although i've seen a couple that were decent. I've never played another Squier (or Fender for that matter) that comes anywhere near my Squier Affinity in terms of playability.
The necks on the Standards and Bullets seem to be thicker, clunkier and aren't finished as well as my Affinity. I've also never seen one with fretwork as fine as mine. Funny thing is; i'm a Gibson fan.
The gripe i've always had with that guitar is how its so body-light which robs a lot of tone. Being more of a fixed bridge guy I blocked the trem and filled the spring cavity with a block of mahogany which gives it more than enough tone to confuse anyone who picks it up expecting a typical 'Squier sound' to come out. It also helps to shift the balance of weight more toward the body than the neck, which I feel is much more comfortable than a neutral neck-body balance.
