If I played slide, I think I'd use glass. But I read something recently that I'd like to pass on. This guy wrote that, right before he went on stage, he reached into his bag to get his glass slide. And pulled out a bloody finger.
I'd put it in a poke, or make some kind of case for it.

You gave me an idea. Carve out a piece of foam. Styrofoam or Tempur-Pedic, or something like that.

It depends, if your using a home made glass slide, then that could happen, but the pro ones are pyrex and INCREDIBLY hard to break. You would have to drop a 4x12 on one of those to shatter it.

I had a dunlop slide that I dropped of my nightstand onto carpet and it shattered. It wasnt chipped before this either.

really? i have chucked mine about, dropped it on concrete etc. I have a really big thick one though (it was the only one that would fit over my giant 3rd finger

Stress fractures. One day it'll break, and probably with a relatively gentle bump. You should find something to keep it in.
