Pro Tools Recording Studio
«
on:
August 06, 2011, 04:23:49 PM »
Having " Pro Tools Recording Studio", the sound quality i record into the pc has nothing to do with my soundcard and is very good due to the Pro Tools Recording Studio right?
I love to record my guitar songs with Adobe Audition, but the way i connect my guitar and mic to the pc it feels like i t has a lot of quality issues, probably because my soundcard isnt great, so buying the Pro Tools Recording Studio hardware i will have everything i need to record voice and guitar with high quality right?
Thanks in advance for the anwers

No. quite simply. Pro tools is just a means of recording and mixing your sound (and you can get software that does that basically just as well for free)
http://www.reaper.fm/
- I used this software to record my album, with. Its free just you have to sit through a 6 second nag screen on boot up.
The quality of your input soundcard and microphones is going to determine the overall quality of the sound. Not the software you use to record it on.
What soundcard are you using?

Will agree 100% on the above statement if you'll allow me to add that the software can actually make a difference in the overall quality of the recorded sound. Primarily I mean that DAW/recording software add-ons can and do affect your sound - like reverbs/delays, compressors, they even make analog tape filter plug-ins to make digital recordings not sound "so digital" and more like it came off of a fat old multichannel reel-to-reel.
But otherwise James is spot-on correct - a digital recorder is a digital recorder. The best way to assure a quality recorded sound is to use a quality signal path in front of the recorder - a decent audio interface/sound card is a must IMO, and decent cables/effects/instruments/amps/cabs/mics help a lot too when talking about indirectly recording guitars.

Yea of course, something like protools is going to have
better plugins
but that is something
entirely different
If you plug straight in to your soundcard and record something in protools then in reaper, the only way its going to sound better in one is if you have not set one up properly and it is set to record in a lower quality.

You won't hear the differences between the algorithms for Protools and Audition....ever. You need a better interface/sound card.
Audition is a very good DAW, and I much prefer it to Protools, actually. When it comes to choosing a DAW, like Herbie mentioned, you've got plugins (which are very different), and you've got user interface; the layout; the look; work flow. In that department, I think Audition far tops protools.
That's as just the software. If you were looking to buy into the whole Protools/AVID line, that's a different story. But, the new protools (9) can run with any companies interface.
I would suggest, if you're looking for a good upgrade, look into usb or firewire audio interfaces. Note: for a firewire interface, you'll probably need to buy a separate firewire chip (~$40). The chipset on your mother board (if you even have one) will most likely not work.
Decent interface and a few not too expensive mics (Shure SM57 or Sennheiser e609's are great for guitar, and both only around $100 new), and you're recordings will sound much much better. No need for new expensive software.

plugin schmugin
There is a tool called diamondcut.
If it sounds bad and you need it to sound better,
and just can't figure out all the features of diamondcut,
just run it through it's pentode simulator.
Problem with a lot of 'plugins' is it still uses
a cheap wavetable chip on the soundcard.
(but without the soundcard's input preamp)
Maybe that's why you can't hear the difference.
I see they have a new version.
I think I could fix up a sloppy multitrack
with 'Punch and Crunch'
more easily than with audacity, which I should use
to remaster.

I meant you won't hear the difference between a clean recording to a .wav file (if given that everything else is the same). The plugins are most certainly different, and sound different.

right, some plugins (all that I know) work on wav files (or small scattered segments)
A lot of real time processing is done with wavetable hardware.
It can be accessed as quick as memory.

This. I don't know about now, but years ago you couldn't buy Pro Tools software, you had to buy a whole new machine with it installed. If this kind of thing is what you're talking about, then your quality likely will improve, providing you have decent mics etc. But as many people have repeated already, changing software won't affect your base recording.

Garbage in, garbage out. You need a good interface to get a good clean signal into your computer. I also use Reaper and I could not be happier with it.
This is my setup, just to give you an idea:
Senheisser e609 microphone
M-Audio Fast Track Pro (the non pro is just as good)
Reaper (free)
I can either mic the guitar cabinet or go direct into the fast track (bass).
You have a lot of options for the microphone but the most common ones are the Sure SM57 and the Sennheisser e609. I chose the Senn because you can just drape it over the cab with no stand. The Fast Track seemed to be one of the safest and true and tested interfaces out there, so I went with that. The mics and the PC interfaces can be found for cheaps on eBay. FYI, the SM57 and the SM58 are the same mic, the only difference is that the SM58 has a pop filter for vocals that can be removed.
EDIT: Make sure that your PC interface has phantom power if you go with a mic that requires you to have it.

When the Mbox (Pro Tools) first came out , I was foolish enough to buy one upon the recommendation of the "expert" at GC saying it was just "plug and play " ... The Mbox worked a treat , but the software required an EXTENSIVE learning period and much upgrading ($$$) ... Not the easiest thing to use, especially for me, a rank computer recording beginner... When they said PRO, they meant it !!!
Now I use Garage Band , which seems MUCH easier to use ... and it came with my Mac... software gets updated automatically , no further purchases required as with Pro Tools ...

Im talking about the hardware package that comes with USB connection, you connect the guitar to that box(i think its called "Fast Track M-audio" or something like it) and then connect it to the pc through USB.
PS: Iv also tried some softwares, the clean recorded wav file is pretty much the same, the diference is mainly in the other stuff like reverbs, delays, distortions and of course the overall simplicity of the sofware.
But my question was hardware related, connecting it usb i dont even have nothing connected to the soundcard, how come it still mathers?
Thankx for all the answers!

I'm not sure why it matters.
I see stuff from line 6 that is more suited
for a guitar only interface.
It is more well designed for the specifics
of recording guitar tracks.
M-Audio is more general purpose,
and also on the used market more,
because it's no easier to use (IMO)
and more noisy than line 6 (for example.)
In fact, I think m-audio often uses the same 'guts'
you can get from a $15 USB Guitar
adapter on e-gay.
I'd be looking at a behringer xenyx.
