"The question asker"

« on: January 08, 2012, 10:00:23 PM »

Hey guys! In a moment of spontaneity, I decided I wanted to build Mando-Diddley. Basically it's a diddley bo with a mandolin scale and mandolin strings. I need some help though. Can someone give me a wiring diagram or tell me what to do for a 1 humbucker NO VOLUME setup? I know that it's super simple.. But I'm electronically inept.. The Humbucker only has one wire coming out of it..

I'm also pretty inept with wiring too, but you should be able to wire directly to a jack, if that's what you mean. Although, there should also be a ground wire coming out of it.

I have a ground coming from the jack to the "bridge" (if you can call it that) and the one wire from the humbucker running to the jack also. Just picking up crazy hum and that's it.

Funny, I was just thinking about building a four sting, out of some scrap boards I got.

I don't know if it's exactly what you're looking for, but on instructables.com, there's a write up for a one string with a humbucker. Electronically, it should be the same.

A humbucker has 2 wires coming from it. It will have one that is insulated and the other is a braided wire that is wrapped around the other insulated wire. Sometimes cheap pickups will just have 2 insulated wires but it sounds like you have the kind with the braided ground wire.

The insulated one goes to the tip of the input jack. The other one goes to the ring of the jack. The ring of the jack should also connect to the bridge, supposing it is metal.

If you can't figure it out or my assumption about the pickup is wrong then you must post pictures of the pickup and wiring it has.

I should very much like to build a mandolin as well. A diddley would be acceptable. I'd love to hear some more details about your build!  Cool
