I have come to the painful realization that in order to get good recording tone from my amp I have to crank it to levels that would make my wife and neighbors a bit uncomfortable, so I am looking into emulators. Sometime ago I got a hold of some software plugins that I could use with my DAW but they really sucked, they were made by Peavey I think. Then there is the cab simulator made by R3FX which runs for about $100, it seems like a nice option but the demo I have seen shows it in conjunction with his Resistafier pedal, which I do not intend to purchase. H&K makes their Red Box, which is similar to the R3FX. I have also looked into units like the Line 6 HD500, which among other things has emulated output, amp and cab sims which are pretty attractive, but the price is just over $400 new. Lastly there is the Blackstar HT-1 that goes for about $200 which has an emulated output.

Too many options and I don't know which one is going to provide the best results. Any comments and experiences with emulated output and silent recording will be greatly appreciated.

You could try the Axetrak, which is an isolated cabinet designed for quiet recording situations: http://www.jlhproducts.com/axetrak/ . It goes for a bit over $400.

Can I safely assume that you believe that micing is the way to go?

I can play sideways.

The emulated output on the HT-20 is pretty awesome, I have to say. For cleans that's another story though. Haven't tried it with a cab so I can't tell you if it's an emulated output issue or an issue of the cleans period. Distorted tones are rad though.

At the risk of sounding like a broken record....

SansAmp.  (still made in USA!)

BT , funny you should mention that .... I have a Tech21 T-10 amp  (just a little 3SB)  but I did some recording with it and while the amp through that small speaker sounds “meh”  , it sounded Great through the board from the line out ...  Rawk1  Dead Quiet too ...  supposedly based on SansAmp technology , there are some really cool tones in that box.. especially for a SS amp ..  Cool

Thank you. Unfortunately I've seen some reviews about the AxeTrak that are not very favorable. Some people like it though, mainly for cleans but the users who like distortion don't like it very much. I am mostly on the second bunch.

OK, you got my attention. I am looking at the GT2 but there is something that is not too clear to me yet. I know I can use it as a pedal in my chain and I can also use it to completely replace my amp (SANSamp). But can I use it in conjunction with my amp to get my preamp's tones? I really like the way my amp sounds.

I mean: Guitar >> Preamp (loop?) >> SansAmp >> Audio Interface >> Computer. I think I am going to run into problems with no speaker load on the amp right?

I know the H&K red box taps the signal on the speaker out before the cab, then it splits it and one goes to the speaker (load) and the other goes to my Audio Interface, but those have reviews that are not that good. Then there is this one:

Why don't I just buy longer cables and stuff my combo inside my car in the garage? Then run them back to my room! I only need a longer mic cable and a longer guitar cable. Maybe not my car, but my wife's car is pretty quiet.

Fixed!

I am going to need 50 ft cables. Is that going to be a problem? Noise? Signal loss?

I think your gonna want a boost. That or maybe look into wireless gear? Our bassist has a cordless system and it sounds great.

The signal is going to have to go through a couple of walls and the car itself.

I used to pick up wireless systems on my radio scanner when I'd pull my cab up to clubs.

Um, how much is a decent wireless system? I can get the cables for $15 each plus shipping. Cheap cables that is.
