My guess is that since the TRS cable is stereo, and therefore has three wires (left signal, right signal and common ground) and they are using a mono signal (mono signal and ground) there is one cable left that can be used for power. For power you need two wires, the live and the ground. The signal already has a ground, so it must be shared. In theory the shared ground should make the signal cleaner as well.

It wouldnt be too hard to modify existing pedals to be powered like this either.

Though, it means patch cable are going to be even more expensive...
