Let this be a lesson about tube amps. Always have a speaker plugged into the head before power up.  Doh

Ehh, how damaging is this? When I first bought my Music Man HD130 head, I may have fired it up a few times sans cab just to see if it worked...

LOL! I plugged in headphones on the speaker out of my Music Man 65 head at one point and did many other stupid things with it. Apart from blowing fuses, nothing ever broke. Leo built those things well and I think he oversized the trannies.

Just two rules to remember with a tube amp ...
1. ALWAYS have a speaker plugged in to the speaker output jack ...
2. NEVER plug the speaker output into the input of another amp ...  no matter how cool you think it sounds ...  Shocked

Uh oh...does this mean mine is going to be effed? I may have also tried plugging it into my Blues Jr. speaker using an instrument cable but got no sound when I turned it on (same impedence)  Facepalm

I think that means you probably fried the cable. I swear I saw a video where someone actually lit a cable on fire doing that.

Errr, how did you manage that?  Huh BJ speakers have a cable with a plug attached. I'm guessing you plugged the output of your MM into the footswitch socket of your BJ.  :face palm:

If nothing smelled burned, you'll probably be all right. If you want to use your BJ's speaker with your Music Man, just unplug the speaker from the BJ and plug it into your MM. Don't turn it all the way up though, you'll fry the speaker.

I wouldn't worry too much about breaking the Music Man amp, those things were built like tanks.

Good to know. So just to be clear, all I need to get it running is find a cab with the right impedance, have enough headroom for its wattage, and use a speaker cable and not an instrument cable? Am I missing anything? I've never used an amp head so I have no idea what I'm doing  Facepalm

That's about it, yes. "Headroom for it's wattage" = the speakers in your cab should be at least capable of supporting 130 Watts, otherwise you'll fry them (if you're crazy and turn the amp up all the way). This means that a 2X12 cab with 75 Watt speakers is largely sufficient.

So for the speakers do I just add up the wattage individually? I was thinking of some Weber Thames 100w (fane crescendo clones)...does that mean a 2x12 configuration is simply 200w then? I bought the amp with the intention of running it 65w mode only...is there some voodoo where its 130w scaled down (and thus need appropriate headroom for 130w regardless), or will headroom for 65w be sufficient? Would running 65w into 200w speakers be too much headroom?

I thought you wanted to double the watt rating for the speakers. An amp is rated for continuous current, not peak, so they could be putting out significantly more watts at times.

I coud be wrong though. My memory is iffy.
