Best strings? the most expensive ones of course are the best... just kidding
just find out what gauge you like best and go from there... you won't find much of a difference unless they're coated, flatwound, or anything else weird.

And I would recommend going to your local music shop and trying all of them out as far as distortion pedals.

I'm still modding my Boss SD-1, which isn't at the moment working. Embarrassed

I have however, narrowed it down to a loose connection or a short, somewhere. Just need to find out where. I sure will have plenty of questions in the future.
